How to make fabric knot hair bow – free sewing pattern and tutorial

How to make fabric knot hair bow – free sewing pattern and tutorial | diy.ac

I don’t throw away any scraps. I have two big baskets full of my leftover fabrics because I never know what idea I will spontaneously come to my mind. When a new idea comes I like to root my baskets around, which are a kind of kingdom of different colors, prints, and textures – this is the nicest moment in working on a new design.

Today I’ve made knot bows – perfect for using up even the smallest pieces of fabric and although it is very simple project, the final result pleases everyone’s eyes; even beginner sewers can make some fun and colorful accessory perfect to decorate little girl’s hair elastics. Children can also use these bows in their craft projects or they can decorate other hair accessories – not only elastics, but for example hair clips – all you need is to tie a bow in a knot and glue it to the hair clip.

For one Hair Knot Bow you will need:

  • 2 pieces of fabric 7 x 2 inches (18 x 5 cm)
  • a sewing machine and basic sewing tools
  • a chopstick (as a chopstick you can use e.g. a brush handle)
  • 1 hair elastic

Materials: You can use many types of fabric, but they should be rather thin. If you use too thick fabric, the procedure of tying the knot around the elastic will be more difficult.

Finished size – about 4 inches (10 cm).

STEP 1

Cut out 2 pieces of fabric 7 x 2 inches (18 x 5 cm).

STEP 2

Round the edges. You can redraw the round shape using a small bottle, a jar, or a cup etc.

STEP 3

Place these 2 pieces with right sides together and sew around using 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) seam allowance, but leave about 2 inches (5 cm) opening in the center of the one edge to to turn the bow right side out.

STEP 4

Turn the bow right side out and gently push the round edges out – you can use a chopstick. Then iron your bow.

STEP 5

Now, all you need to do is to close up the opening –  sew near to the edge on the right side of the fabric.

Done! You can tie your bow in a knot around a hair elastic.
